You’ll probably know by now that the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) changes are now in place, having been rolled out for all vehicles first registered on or after 1 April 2017, with an additional rate for new cars that cost more than £40,000.
The changes mean that the first time you tax a car after 1 April 2017 with a list price (the published price of the vehicle, including any factory-fit options, before any discounts) of more than £40,000, you will pay the rate based on CO2 emissions.
After the first 12 months, you will pay the standard annual rate, based on the fuel the vehicle uses, plus an additional rate of £310 a year for the next five years.
If this sounds like it’s something that might affect you, then you’ll probably be interested to know that you could, in fact, save hundreds of pounds in duty in the long run by substituting one or two factory-fit options for the equivalent dealer-fit accessory.
Savvy switches that you could take advantage of include:
- Tow bar
- Dog guard
- Rear sunblinds
- Parking distance sensors
- Dog guard
