We’re now in December which means winter is well underway. You might prepare yourself for winter, for example, by buying more warm clothing and putting the heating up in your house, but do you prepare your car? If not, why not? Preparing your car for winter is just as important (if not more so) as your home, and we want to convince you why there’s no better time to get your car serviced this season.
Freezing temperatures and chilly weather mean the number of breakdowns can more than double throughout winter. The cold weather can cause a number of problems for cars, but most of the time, these issues can be prevented by taking your car for a service and making sure it has regular maintenance checks.
The battery should be first priority when it comes to maintenance of your car. If your car is having problems starting, then make sure you get the battery checked out and replaced if necessary. The winter months can put car batteries under increased strain due to the plummeting temperatures and increased use of lights and heating. Also, be sure to top up engine coolant with antifreeze (engine coolant should be a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze) and keep an eye on the condition of your tyres.
It’s worth putting together a car breakdown kit to keep in your boot. Not only should this include a very warm coat and blanket, but you should also make sure you pack a shovel, torch, hi-visibility vest, screenwash, food and drink supplies, scraper and de-icer, as well as a fully charged mobile phone.
Remember that we offer free roadside assistance – 12 months free UK and European Roadside Assistance* with any Ford service.
