Ford introduces new MyKey System

The new Ford MyKey system is being debuted on the Fiesta for the Style and above. NCAP estimates that if every car in Europe was fitted with MyKey, over 4,000 accidents could be avoided and 150 fatalities could be prevented.

MyKey Features

• Limit the top speed of the vehicle to 80mph
• Limit the audio system to 45% of its total volume.
• Apply a speed alert chime from 45mph to 80mph to improve drivers speed
awareness
• Prevent disabling of ESP, park assist or active city stop (where fitted).
• Enable a persistent seat belt reminder with audio mute.
• Trigger an earlier low fuel warning when the car has just 75 miles of fuel remaining,
rather than the standard 50 miles, to help promote more responsible and ecofriendly
driving habits

Ford Boosts UK Market Lead in 2012

Ford extended its UK market lead in 2012 while recording 36 consecutive years of car sales leadership and 47 years of UK commercial vehicle (CV) sales leadership. Ford's full-year car sales beat overall UK market growth, increasing by 6.0 per cent in 2012, compared with 2011. Other highlights of the official full-year 2012 figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) include:

  • Ford is the number one UK car brand for 36 successive years.
  • Ford commercial vehicles have been the UK's favourite for 47 years.
  • Ford stretches its lead over its closest rival by almost 60 per cent.
  • Ford Fiesta is the UK best seller for the fourth successive year.
  • Ford Focus tops UK sales in November and December.
  • Ford Transit maintains its clear lead in CV sales.

According to the official SMMT figures full year car sales in the UK in 2012 were up 5.3 per cent at 2,044,609 registrations, compared with 2011. Ford sold 281,917 cars in the UK last year, up from 265,894 in 2011.

Ford Fiesta was the UK car sales leader again in 2012, having taken the position from the Ford Focus in 2009, with 109,265 registrations up from 96,112 in 2011. Ford Fiesta also increased its market share to 5.4 per cent, from 5.0 per cent in 2011. Other Ford models with increased sales in 2012, compared with 2011, included the Ford Ka, Ford Focus, Ford Kuga, Ford Mondeo and Ford S-MAX, while the new Ford B-MAX has proved immediately popular with 3,199 sales recorded already, since its October launch.

Mark Ovenden, Ford Britain managing director, said: "Ford beat overall market growth in 2012 and extended its sales lead in a fiercely competitive market thanks to the launches of award-winning vehicles and technologies and the unrivalled strength of our dealer network."

“More people choose Ford over any other vehicle brand in the UK and as we face similar, difficult market conditions in 2013 we will look to satisfy the needs of our private and business customers by strengthening our vehicle range still further and providing the best sales and service offering in our dealerships."

Ford Transit has led the UK CV sector from its launch in 1965 and Ford’s CV market leadership remains unchallenged with a 21.6 per cent share for the full year 2012. Ford medium commercials secured 30.7 per cent of the segment in 2012, up from 26.8 per cent in 2011.

The official figures released by the SMMT today show that in December UK car sales were up by 3.7 per cent to 123,557 units, compared with December 2011. Ford car sales increased 6.6 per cent to 15,656, up from 14,689 in December 2011 and Ford's overall share of car sales was 12.7 per cent for the month, up from 12.3 per cent in December 2011.

The Ford Focus was again the UK’s best seller in December, repeating its November result. Critical acclaim for the new Fiesta suggests that it will reclaim its clear No 1 sales spot in 2013 and it enters the year alongside the ingenious Ford B-MAX with both cars available with the award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, which also features in the Ford Focus, the Ford C-MAX and the Ford Grand C-MAX.

Fiesta rated best used car by values experts

Ford Fiesta, Britain’s best-selling car, has been declared Used Car of the Year 2012 by CAP.

Top of CAP’s criteria when choosing its Used Car of the Year were affordability, practicality, reputation and popularity in the used car market.

Mark Norman, of CAP, said: “It is always tempting for the motoring media and other industry observers to take ‘the petrol head’ approach when giving awards to cars which excite them, but the CAP Used Car of the Year Award recognises the contribution a car makes to both consumers and dealers.”

New Transit Custom named International Van of the Year 2013
This award is voted for by the most knowledgeable journalists in the world when it comes to commercial vehicles, so it’s an important external confirmation of what we already knew – Transit Custom is great new product that offers style, practicality, driving quality and low cost of ownership.

Not only has the Transit Custom won by a wide margin, but this was record fourth time since 2001 that a Transit van has won this prestigious award, an unprecedented achievement. Indeed, in presenting the award, the chairman of the International Van of the Year jury, Pieter Wieman, said: “The van has a car-like exterior and interior, driving dynamics which are very close to a passenger car and, notwithstanding that, it is a very functional and practical vehicle.”

He added: “Ford has paid a lot of attention to the active and passive safety aspects of the new model, and to reducing the cost-of-ownership.”

This prestigious award follows our recent success in winning the International Engine of the Year award for the 1.0-litre EcoBoost, and is further testament to Ford’s product strength. Transit Custom, and the stylish Tourneo Custom people-carrier, are important new entries for Ford in the growing CV market, but they are just first steps in our ambitious plan to completely overhaul and expand our entire commercial vehicle line-up for Europe over the next two years. This includes a new two-tonne Transit, all-new Transit Connect and a new small Transit Courier.

The company also confirmed that several additional vehicles from its global portfolio will come to Europe in the near term – including the legendary American icon, the Ford Mustang.

“Even with the near-term business environment, Europe presents a significant opportunity for profitable growth,” said Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally. “Today, we are accelerating the introduction of our new products in Europe, leveraging our One Ford plan – with a full family of vehicles offering the very best quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value – just like we did when we transformed our business in North America.”

Ford of Europe’s product offensive saw the company today announce:

family of new Tourneo people carriers

• The Ford Mustang, the iconic American sports car, is coming to Europe

• An acceleration of the rollout of new technologies including EcoBoost engines, SYNC in-car connectivity, inflatable rear seat belts, MyKey and other driver assist technologies

“The European market holds potential for profitable growth that’s clouded at the moment by the economic crisis,” said Stephen Odell, Ford of Europe Chairman and CEO. “The total European car and CV market, including Russia, is expected to grow 20 percent in the next five years to 23 million vehicles. While others are backing off or cutting product investments, we at Ford are accelerating the introduction of new products, leveraging our One Ford global strengths.”

New Fiesta
Ford unveiled the new Fiesta, taking Europe’s best-selling small car to a new level with a sharp new design inside and out, improved fuel efficiency and a host of new technologies including Ford SYNC, MyKey and Active City Stop. Fiesta will be available with the 2012 “International Engine of the Year” 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, a combination that is expected to deliver best-in-class fuel economy.

The new Fiesta, on sale later this year, features a power-dome bonnet and bold trapezoidal front grille bracketed by “laser-cut” headlamps with daytime LED running lamps.

The new three- and five-door Fiesta models join the new performance Fiesta ST, equipped with a 180PS 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine that delivers 20 percent more power, and a 20 percent reduction in CO2 compared to the previous Fiesta ST. The Fiesta ST is expected to deliver bestin-class fuel efficiency when it goes on sale in 2013.

Ford also confirmed that the all-new B-MAX small multi-activity vehicle will go sale next month. The B-MAX offers the exclusive Easy Access Door System with integrated B-pillar, offering a 1.5-metre unobstructed passenger opening, as well as SYNC and the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. The B-MAX will deliver best-in-class fuel economy in both petrol and diesel versions.

All-New Mondeo
The stylish all-new Ford Mondeo offers striking design and premium-level interior craftsmanship. Uniquely for the large-car segment in Europe, it will feature Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, which is expected to deliver best-in-class fuel economy.

Built on Ford’s global CD-segment platform, the refined new version of Ford’s large car will be available in four-door, five-door or wagon body styles, and a first-in-segment four-door petrol hybrid electric version, Ford’s first full hybrid electric car for the European market. A diesel allwheel-drive variant, offering superior traction, performance and handling, will be made available for the first time.

All-new Mondeo delivers segment-first adaptive full LED headlamps; SYNC with MyFord Touch, which includes an eight-inch colour touchscreen; and the introduction of segment-first rear inflatable seatbelts in Europe.

“The new Mondeo will change perceptions of Ford large cars by offering an unbeatable blend of premium design, craftsmanship and smart technology without the premium price,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president of Global Product Development.

SUVs
With SUV sales expected to increase by 34 percent in Europe over the next five years. Ford plans to leverage its historic leadership in SUVs in North America and other regions around the world to quickly expand its line-up in Europe. Ford expects to sell more than one million SUVs in Europe in the next six years with SUVs accounting for one in ten of all Fords sold in the region by 2016.

It starts with the all-new Kuga on sale later this year. The Kuga offers a sharper design, improved package and more technology, including an innovative Ford hands-free lift gate that opens with a wave of a foot under the bumper.

Ford also announced today that the all-new EcoSport, a global small SUV, will go on sale within 18 months. Modern and innovative, the new Ford EcoSport was designed to combine best-inclass design, technology, quality, safety and value aimed at attracting a new generation of consumers who want the utility of an SUV in a smaller vehicle. It will come available with the acclaimed 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine.

The company also confirmed that the Edge – a larger, more premium crossover that is a success in North America and other markets – also will come to Europe.
“The expanding European SUV market is a unique opportunity for Ford and lands right in our sweet spot,” said Jim Farley, group vice president of Global Marketing, Sales and Service. “No other company can touch Ford’s expertise, global portfolio and credibility when it comes to SUVs.”

Commercial vehicles
Commercial vehicle sales in Europe are forecast to grow by more than 30 percent to nearly 4 million a year by 2017, with the small CV segment growing by more than 70 percent.

In response, Ford is harnessing its global platform strategy and completely redesigning its entire commercial vehicle line-up for Europe over the next two years.

Ford today revealed the complete Transit family of commercial vehicles and people carriers that includes:

• All-new Transit Custom, primed to deliver style, driver appeal, class-leading load-carrying ability, Ford SYNC and best-in-class fuel economy to the one-tonne commercial vehicle segment. Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom go on sale this year

• All-new two-tonne global Transit, a functional, tough and innovative replacement for the existing Transit beginning next year. It also will replace the long-serving E-Series van in North America

• The all-new global compact Transit Connect, on course to deliver best-in-class fuel economy and CO2, whole life costs and security when it debuts next year

• Ford’s new entry into the fast-growing European small CV segment, the new Transit Courier. This compact, integrated van is based on Ford’s Global B platform and planned for sale in 2014

Ford also launched a new generation of smart and stylish passenger vehicles under the Tourneo brand. The new people mover range is spearheaded by the all-new Tourneo Connect – revealed for the first time – which joins the larger Tourneo Custom model in the revitalised lineup. Ford anticipates annual sales of 500,000 commercial vehicles per year by 2016, which would increase its share of the European CV market to more than 13 percent from 9.3 percent today.

“With the all-new One Ford commercial vehicle line-up, Ford will have the most comprehensive and most up-to-date line-up of CVs in Europe. No brand will offer wider coverage of the light and medium commercial vehicle segments than Ford,” Samardzich said. “We leveraged our global expertise into designing the new Transit family from the ground up with superb capability, best-in-class cost of ownership and amazing new features.”

Mustang coming to Europe
Ford today announced the legendary Mustang will go on sale in Europe.

“You only have to look at the incredible response to Mustang when it has appeared this summer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, in the U.K., and at the Le Mans Classic, in France, to get a sense of the excitement this American icon generates across Europe,” Odell said. “The Mustang is uniquely Ford and has a huge fan base here in Europe. Now those fans have something to look forward to and we look forward to providing more details in the near future.

Environmental and technological leadership
Ford will rapidly expand the availability of EcoBoost petrol engine technology, low CO2 ECOnetic Technologies, vehicle electrification and driver assistance features:

Coming soon in the all-new Ranger, 3.2L Duratorq proves itself by beating all-comers in 1000km desert race
Coming soon in the all-new Ranger, 3.2L Duratorq proves itself by beating all-comers in 1000km desert race.

Ford’s impressive new Duratorq TDCi diesel engine will be making its market debut in the next-generation Ford Ranger towards the end of this year, but it has already proven its mettle by taking victory in a current Ranger in the arduous Botswana 1000km Kalahari Desert Race, the toughest event on the off-road racing calendar, thus making it the first diesel-powered vehicle to win a race overall, and in the premier Super Production (SP) category.

The 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbodiesel engine was built at Ford’s South Africa Struandale Engine Plant. The outstanding result on the Desert Race has shown that it has the performance and the reliability to match and even beat its rivals – some of which are powered by internationally-sourced, highly-tuned large-capacity V8 petrol engines.

“The Duratorq TDCi engine has provided outstanding performance and has a perfect reliability record this season,” commented Neil Woolridge, who heads up Ford’s off-road racing outfit. “What makes this even more remarkable is that the basic engine is completely standard, just as it came out of the Struandale Engine Plant.”

However, Woolridge points out that due to the extremely competitive nature of the top-flight SP category, the Duratorq TDCi engine has benefitted from a raft of high-performance bolt-on components. The intercooler, injectors, high-pressure pump and fuel rail have all been upgraded. Additionally, the racing engine uses two aftermarket turbochargers built into a purpose-made manifold.

Woolridge states that this has unleashed an astonishing 750 Nm of torque (up from the standard engine’s 470 Nm), along with 320 HP (almost 240 kW of power, up from 147 kW) – without affecting durability. “The Ford Ranger Duratorq TDCi is the first diesel-powered vehicle to compete in the SP class, and is now proudly the first to secure an overall and class victory in this category, which is dominated by high-performance petrol engines.”
